First Class of Diplomacy and Conflict Resolution Students Mufti Hassoun Receives George Mason University Student Delegation

Mufti Sheikh Ahmed Hassoun of Syria received the delegation of GMU upper studies students, Diplomacy & Conflict Resolution Dept in Ministry of Awqaf. The delegation is visiting Syria in coordination with GMU representative the Syrian International Academy. Director of the Center on Religion, Diplomacy and Conflict Resolution at George Mason University Prof. Marc Gopin was head of the delegation.

Mufti of Damascus Dr. Abdulfattah al-Bazm, SIA Chairman Dr. Nizar Meihoub and a number of lecturers and students of International and Diplomatic Affairs Diploma in SIA were also there to receive the delegation.

"Heavenly Religions have always called for strengthening the links, as well as preserving humanitarian values and dialogue among peoples until they achieve peace and stability of the world," said Mufti Hassoun to the delegation. He also added that he has addressed the US former president George W. Bush before saying "Do not send your people to our countries for killing but for saying brayers because our land is blessed. […] We have transmitted Christianity to the world and we have preserved Judaism in the world […] and Islam orders us to preserve Christianity and Judaism."

"There is no American, European or Arab civilization; there is rather one human civilization started with the first man living on earth, and will finish with the last man on it," the Mufti added. "There are various human cultures, and all end up to one human civilization." He said segregation among people appeared only when humans "transformed religion into political doctrines."
In a reference that the current situation is merely politicians' manipulation with clergymen, he wondered whether Prophet Moses was Ashkenazi or Oriental, whether Jesus Christ was a Protestant or a Catholic, and whether Prophet Mohammed was Sunni or Shiite. On the other hand, he said that the Arab war against Israel is not an Islamic one against Judaism.

"We are originally brothers under the dome of God before possessing any nationality," said the Mufti, as he attacked racism and commended US scientists discoveries about the inaccuracy of Darwin's theory concerning the origin of mankind. He also spoke about the unity of mankind, religions and civilizations which all lead to monotheism.

Prof. Gopin said that the US people is grieving over the children of Iraq, Gaza and Haiti; he said the day must come when politicians would have more wisdom to achieve peace. He also referred to the role clergymen may play in making peace, spreading love and dialogue concepts among people and in cutting down conflict and wars.

The delegation members talked with the Mufti expressing their happiness after they had visited Syria and listened to his humanitarian words, saying the visit has changed many mistaken preconceptions formed by US media.
